What’s New
What changed on The Split, newest first.
August 25, 2026
- My Pantry can now keep more than one shelf — one at home, one at the office, one wherever you pour. An Active Pantry section at the top of the page holds one picker: the pantry chosen there is the one the whole site pours from — What Can I Pour?, What Am I Missing?, the Event Menu Planner, across pages and visits — and it’s the shelf the page stocks, renames, or strikes below. Every shelf starts with the kitchen basics — lemon, sugar, soda water and their kin — listed like any bottle, so a pantry that lacks one can say so: switch it off or strike it out. Everything on your shelf so far is the first pantry, Home — rename it as you please.
- Collections can be built together: a Collaborators button on any collection you own invites another regular — or a business, whose whole crew comes along — to share the pen. They add, remove, reorder, and edit alongside you; deleting it and choosing who’s in stay yours. The invitation rings their bell and is answered on the collection’s page, your bell hears the decision, and a private drink someone puts on a shared collection reads as public to everyone building it — on the collection, in search, on its maker’s page.
August 23, 2026
- Three new measures in the recipe editor: unit, slice, and piece — for the egg, the orange slice, and the chunk of pineapple that never fit dash or cube.
- Businesses can pull up a stool: a bar, restaurant, or shop can have a page of its own — its drinks and collections, a few words, its socials, and a Find Us At list of addresses with map links, phone numbers, and a reservations link. Ask for yours under your name’s menu → Add Your Business; the house reads every request. Once yours is approved, you publish as the business from the same editors you already know, invite other regulars to help run it, and its followers hear about new drinks the way they would from any regular. When three places have drinks to show, a Places section joins the top bar.
August 22, 2026
- Your name, your way: add an optional first and last name — when signing up, or any time under Settings → Your Name — and choose whether My Page shows it, in parentheses under your display name. The display name stays what regulars see and tag everywhere, and changing it under Settings carries every @-tag of you along.
- Signed in, the Collections page now starts with a “+ New Collection” square — one click and you’re building.
- A recipe can now say whether it’s your own invention or a drink you’re writing up — a checkbox on the last step of the editor. Your inventions read “by you”; the rest read “uploaded by you”. Everything you’ve posted so far counts as an invention; untick the box on any that aren’t.
- The Split has a Discord — the icon in the top bar, beside the bell, takes you there.
August 21, 2026
- Search Help, under the search box on The Menu: everything the box understands — quotes, !word, $ingredient, the words that filter, how results are ordered, and what Advanced Search adds — explained on one card.
- A search box now waits in the top bar, beside the wordmark, whenever the real one has scrolled out of sight — click it and you’re back at the search, cursor ready. From a page with no search box of its own, it takes you to The Menu’s.
- The top bar keeps you company on big screens the way it does on phones: it slides away as you read down and returns the moment you scroll up.
August 20, 2026
- The Event Menu Planner, under Cocktails: planning drinks for a party? Say how many cocktails and how many mocktails, pick the ones you’re sure about, and Pick Cocktails fills the open slots — each pick as different in character from the others as the Menu allows. Set theme ingredients (gin as a theme counts every gin; mocktail slots trade an alcoholic theme for its alcohol-free stand-ins, and favor virgin riffs of the picked cocktails), slide up Shared Ingredients to stock fewer bottles for the night, or switch on Prefer My Pantry to lean toward what your shelf can already pour and Prefer Simpler Cocktails toward short, no-prep builds. Keep what you like, reshuffle the rest as often as you please, then save it all as a collection — public or private.
- Swap an ingredient on a recipe and, if what’s now in your glass is another drink on the Menu, a line under the drawing says so — trade the gin in a Martini for vodka and it points you to the Vodka Martini.
- Building a drink that’s already on the Menu — same ingredients, same amounts — says so in The Build, with a link to the original. An exact twin can’t be saved; change an ingredient or an amount to make it yours.
August 19, 2026
- My Page can now say a few words about you, under your name, and point to where else you post — Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, or any website. Fill it in under Settings → My Page; new regulars are asked right after choosing a name. All of it optional.
August 18, 2026
- The bell now tells you when someone wants to try one of your cocktails, has tried it, will drink it again, or added it to a collection — without saying who. Marks in the same hour fold into one line, and your own marks on your own drinks stay quiet.
- What Am I Missing? now also counts a bottle that stands in: under each one, “swapped in for …” names the drinks it unlocks as a substitute for the one thing they lack — buy yellow chartreuse and a Bobby Burns is a Bénédictine swap away. A bottle that only helps that way gets a row of its own, after the ones that unlock a drink outright.
- Every ingredient now says whether it’s vegan — the back bar is marked already (eggs, dairy, honey and what’s made of them, plus the two fish sauces), and a new ingredient asks. Type “vegan” into the search to see only vegan drinks, “!vegan” for the rest, or tick Vegan in Advanced Search. A garnish counts: whipped cream on top is still cream. A drink whose animal pours all have plant stand-ins comes along too — aquafaba for egg white, oat milk for milk, agave for honey — with the swap noted on its card, behind the ones vegan as written.
- Search finds drinks by how they’re made and what they’re served in: shaken, stirred, built, blended, and any glass — coupe, highball, lowball, Nick & Nora… They mix with everything else the search box does: “stirred coupe” or “gin !shaken”.
- Searching for “!mocktail” (or !virgin, !zero-proof, !alcohol-free) leaves the alcohol-free drinks out and lists only the ones with alcohol — the same words without the ! still show mocktails only.
- Advanced Search now filters by character both ways: With Character and Without Character, each with a Choose… button that opens the whole list as checkboxes. Pick smoky and bitter to find drinks with both; rule out sweet to leave every sweet drink off the list.
- Mise en Place and The Method can have headings now: end a line with a colon — “Prepare the syrup:” — and it sits above the steps unnumbered, with the count starting over beneath it.
August 17, 2026
- Adding a cocktail is now six short steps — The Name, The Glassware, The Build, The Final Look, The Character, The Method — with Previous and Next, and a check on each step once it’s filled in. The drawing sits beside every step and grows as you go: an empty glass when you pick one, bands as you pour, color when you settle the look. Editing an existing drink walks the same steps, and you can jump straight to any of them.
- Making more than one? Under the drawing, type how many and every amount scales for the batch. Two or three stack extra glasses beside the drawing; more than that, and it says so next to the glass.
- A few things got their bar names back. The list of every cocktail is The Menu; the people who post here are Regulars; What Can I Make? is now What Can I Pour?; My Wishlist is Want to Try; and the bell shows what happened Since You Were Last In. Nothing moved — only the words.
- The random button is now Surprise Me, in every view.
- The verdict button reads Not for me instead of Will not drink again.
- Saving a cocktail with no traits, or only one or two, now asks first — the Character is what What Should I Try Next? goes by, so a thin one means the drink is rarely recommended. You can always save anyway.
August 16, 2026
- What Should I Try Next? — under Cocktails: drinks you haven’t tried, picked by character from the ones you will drink again. Sweet and complex favorites bring more sweet, complex drinks; each card says why.
- On a phone, the drawing now numbers the glass and lists the ingredients beneath it, so the glass stays big and long names get room. Prefer the names beside the glass? Settings → The Phone Layout → Full Display.
- You can write to us: Contact, in the footer of every page — or Tell Us, under any recipe, when something about it is wrong or shouldn’t be there.
- This page. Come back here to see what changed.
- Searching for a generic ingredient (gin, rye) now finds cocktails that call for a specific one.
- Cocktail cards show your own tracking marks — wishlist, tried, and your verdict.
August 13, 2026
- The shopping page is now called What Am I Missing?
- What Can I Make? lists drinks you can make with a substitution in their own section.
- When someone accepts your invitation, you hear about it in your feed.
August 11, 2026
- The notification feed: new cocktails from makers you follow, collection changes, and follows, each marked read when you open it. Mark All as Read at the foot.
- Collections are edited in place — add, remove, and reorder, then Save once.
- A quoted search term ("gin") matches whole words only; a bare one still matches everywhere.
August 10, 2026
- Tracking marks on every cocktail: wishlist, tried, will drink again, won’t drink again. Each has its own list.
- The pantry is a list of bottles with an in-stock switch on each; the basics (sugar, water, ice, citrus) are assumed unless you say otherwise.
- Homemade components count: with sugar and water on the shelf, What Can I Make? treats simple syrup as made.
- Search ranks the exact name first, then names that start with the term, then words within.
August 8, 2026
- Sign in with Google.
- Advanced search with operators — AND, phrases, exclusion, and ingredient filters where a good substitute counts.
- Zero-proof cocktails are marked, and there is a Mocktails filter.
- Every public page has its own share image, with the drawing on it.
August 7, 2026
- The IBA official list joins the cocktails, with three new glass shapes to draw them in.
